Pau Sambal

food

Still using the Nikon coolpix s9.
Using the macro mode on the camera.
No flash.

I still am not sure the best way to take macro pictures of food or anything using the DSLR. Somehow I find it not as good with my two existing lens. And the lighting is never good. Any tips? Since indoor picture is always a challenge

My Bees

Here's my synopsis on My Bee I.

Shot taken outdoor, so light is an abundance. Focal lens is at 300mm. ISO speed set at 200. Shutter speed 1/800 sec at 5.6f/stop.

The flower is not that big, bout 2.5cm in diameter, height bout a foot tall. so imaginelah I kena tiarap...hehe. and how tiny is the bee.

As u all maklum, Qatar is always a bit breeeezyyy most of the time. Jadi banyak2 lah bersabar....

Increase a lil bit of the contrast and merahkan sikit..jadilah cam ni.

Next is My Bee II

Hudish : Introduction

Really, it is me who should say thank you. Thank you for taking time to share in this blog. May what we dispense and receive be beneficial for all of us.

Wokeh. Let me introduce the few tools I have.

NIKON D70s is the camera I am using. This is obviously an entry level camera. I suppose it is good enough for a person who is learning like me. (by the book answer for tak mampu beli D300)

I also want to give credit to my compact. I carry this all the time, for picture opportunity that may come along. I am using Nikon Coolpix S9. Tapi gua ada sikit boring dengan kamera ini. The indoor picture it takes are not good enough, which sometimes defeats its purpose of easy to use during party purpose. The flash is not powerful enough and it only illuminate the face rather than the surrounding. I use my compact (like any other compact) mainly for MACRO. Or at least using their MACRO mode. This is an example.

Photobucket
.

NIKON Speedlight SB-600 is the flash I am using

two lenses
1. Nikon 18-70mm

I used this mostly when taking group photos during gathering. But what irks me most is when it is set to the widest possible angle, a blackish colour would appear at the corner of the photo. Most of the time I would try not to use the widest angle, but many times I had to edit it using photoshop. Any advice?

Otherwise, it has served me well.

2. Nikon 70-300mm

I like this lens best. I think it takes great portrait photos too adding extra drama to the desired object. No to mention, its easier to take pictures of the faraway objects.

I am also using UV filter and polariser on the 18-70mm lens. I read somewhere that for digital photography, UVfilter is not very necessary as the effects of the bluish casts is negligible on the digital than on film. I suppose, since I started as an SLR user, this has become more of a habit to buy. Perhaps it is now serving as a lens protector than anything else.

It is important to have a protector filter on our lenses as not only does is protect your lens from scratches, it protects the threads on your lens when you attach other filters.

That reminds me, I still do not have filters on my telephoto lens yet.

The polariser has been useful especially taking outdoor photographs. They allow you to remove unwanted reflections from surfaces such as water, glass etc making the reflection on the water clearer. They also enable colors to become more saturated and appear clearer, with better contrast. Maka langit biru bertambah biru bagai di colour-colour gitu.

I use a tripod. Have been useful especially for night photos, or group photos or any photo that would need to include me in them. I don't know the brand. It probably is not branded since it is not that expensive. The stand is telescopic and quite sturdy. It has clips so that you can choose the height level. can tilt head for different angle for the camera. Can pusing-pusing a handle so increase the camera level. A little platform attached to the camera so tak yahlah susah payah nak screw the camera onto the tripod.

And not forgetting my big salesman jual ubat camera bag. hahahahha.

Anyway below are my to buy lists in the order of priority
1. Lens humidifier
2. Filters for my other lens
3. A canggih Lowepro backpack for my camera.

ooopps too long now. Stop sinilah dulu. Let's roll out the discussions.

Matahari Malam - Synopsis

As promised earlier, details on my first contribution. Shot taken as experimental..... camera barulah kan. Lens used 18-55mm EFS, no MACRO, shot at 55mm. ISO speed set at 200 and shutter 1/20 and F/stop at 5.6 Used the camera built in lens, as said earlier experimenting on the camera...

Looks very ordinary kan?

Welcome to the digital world...... edit sikitlah...my firsts experience with cropping.

Purposely cropped it tight and sacrifice the ordinary looking flower to a 1/4 to make it more artistic. I did not "Burn " the backround as the original intent is not a low key photo and left it as such konon2 illuminates from the Sunflower to match my Theme...."Matahari Malam". Adjust the contrast sikit and "CRESPO" outcome mcm magic.....

And Rozie you are right, there is an insect, "Spider". I perasan after upload to computer. It adds more taste to the pic kan? kan? Below is the after effect. Hope my explanation helps....I masih belajar lagi..

Now for my second contribution on flowers, cum insect.....I call it..."My Bee", will post the details later...Njoy......

Basic first - continue

Rozie,

Thanks for inviting me to this project. Like Hj Amran, I too just started wih DSLR about 2-3 Yrs ago. Gave up serious photography with 35mm flim SLR about 14 years ago. Mahal sangat experimenting :-). Now with digital photography you can edit/delete...heheh.

To be in line with the project agenda, the following are my equipments.
Camera - Canon D20
Lens - Canon EFS 18-55mm/4.5, EFS 10-20mm/4.5, EF 50mm/1.8, EF 70-200mm/L2.8, 2X converter. Sigma 70-300mm APO/DX/Macro/3.5
Flash - Speedlite 420EX and 580EX
Velbron Tripod and Manfroto Monopod convertible to Tripod.
Lowepro Backpack fits 15.4" laptop....for travelling
A smaller Lowepro backpack convenient to bring anywhere locally, tak bulky.
The Canon softwares are very useful. with the EOS viewer, you can use your PC/laptop as your viewfinder, kalau tak salah......Other applications like edit your RAW pictures...very powerful, kalau rajinlah...heheh. There's also photostitch application, the only application i've used so far is very handy.

You might be asking..."Apalah si Mamat ni, banyak sangat lens".......What I can say is that that is a result of menggelabar/nafsu....when buying equipment for the first time. A lot of question asks, like is this the right one? Alamak mahallah, beli yang low range dulu lah, dah pandai sikit boleh upgrade......Guess what? WRONG MOVE.
My member, an enthusiast too, adviced me before. Beli trus yang Mid to High end .., jangan gantunglah....nanti nyesal....member budak Indon...heheh. But he's right.
Now most of the time I just use the 10-20mm and 70-200mm.

May I suggest....you buy a camera cabinet/dehumidifier as you've already invested on good camera/lens, its best you keep it away from humidity.

It's good to invest on a monopod, bests use during events like sports, concerts or on a safari trip....it's very mobile.

Banyak I dah membebel.....attached is my first contribution on flower..I call it "Matahari Malam" will give the details later....hope you like it

Basic first please

Rozie
Thanks for starting up the blog. This is my first time blogging. So you may want to educate me on the etiquette in using this blog.

As for suggestion, all of your suggestions are great but I am not sure I am ready for this. I am very green in DSLR. Last time I used film SLR was about 10 yrs ago...so..... Before we go deep into projects, can we spend the initial discussion on the tools that we have and how best to use it. That include both hardware (the camera and its accessories) and the software.

What I have is a Canon EOS40D and Speedlite flash 580ExII? I discover that having a backpack as the camera bag is very convenient when we were travelling in Iran, as well as walking in the golf course.

Let me post my first question in each area:
Hardware - I have an ipod video, which should be an ideal for storage while on the move, esp when you do not plan to bring your laptop. I have read some article that the ipod connector, i.e. to connect the camera to ipod, is slow and not reliable. Any suggestion ?

Software - my Canon comes with 4 softwares which I dont really know to make full use of it. Which one do you use for what purpose? Malas nak baca manual lah ni. I am going back to Malaysia at the end of this month, what software should I bring from Low Yat? I saw there are so many versions and add-on for Adobe Photoshop. Which one should I get?

ok lah. till next time
P/S do we get email when there is a new post ?
